How to build a blog page

When people think about WordPress, they traditionally think of a front page that lists posts or a “blog”. Ashford is a CMS so you can organize any way you want:

  • Blog as front page listing posts with supporting pages
  • Static front page with the blog listing posts as a separate top level page
  • No blog at all

To make it simple, all Ashford sites should use a static page as the front page. Then depending on the template you select, you build what you need.

If you have not read the Getting Started document, please refer to it now. It explains how to set up your site with a static front page and a separate blog page.

How to set up blog as your home page

  • Choose Pro Blogger page template
  • Add a title
  • Add a body (or not)

Then using the Pro Settings Panel,

  • Choose whether this page gets a Hero
  • Select from a dozen layouts which will list posts as excerpts, titles, thumbnails plus
  • Select the number of posts
  • Filter by category or tag

For example, this site’s front page:

  • Pro Blogger page template
  • Title is added
  • Body is added but uses the 960 Grid System to create a visually interesting grid
  • Hero is an image with no link added
  • Layout is thumbnails set to display 12 posts on a page
  • Add widgets to the sidebar_standard

Then this site also has a separate “blog” page which appears like a traditional blog also using the Pro Blogger template. In fact there are several “blog” pages on this site including name the How To page which also the Pro Topic page and filters posts displaying only those in the How To category.
