Google just announced a site service called Page Speed which can accelarate your site by 25 to 60 percent. The new service will function like a content delivery network for your entire site: Google will fetch your pages, optimize them, speed them up and then deliver them. It is much like Cloudflare which some Ashford developers use. I an not sure I recommend either service yet, but it is a harbinger that speed is critical to the success of your site.

It is not a huge update. The official summary says, “This maintenance release fixes a server incompatibility related to JSON that’s unfortunately affected some of you, as well as a few other fixes in the new dashboard design and the Twenty Eleven theme.” But do not blow updates off, you should always update your WordPress software. Why? You risk the security of your site if you do not, plus Google does pay attention to such things.

I just read Smashing Magazines list of Free WordPress Themes: 2011 Edition (via @smashingmag) and see that Ashford was overlooked in the section listing free frameworks. I am a little bummed as they have generously selected Ashford as a high quality free theme and as a WordPress framework in previous roundups.
I downloaded the free PDFs from Stickynotes for UX for use on an upcoming project. For the first, I am going to try hand sketching some wire-frames before I start with pixels.

Looks like since June 30 there has been a problem with the free download link. It is now fixed. Sorry for the inconvenience. I will be contacting anyone who shared their email address since June 30 with the update.
Jetpack is a plugin by Automatic (the company behind WordPress) that gives self-hosted WordPress installations access to many of the cool features loved by hosted WordPress.com users. The only feature of interest to most Ashford users will be the Stats feature — for simple in dashboard reporting.
According to the stat site, WordPress now powers 50 million sites and about half are self-hosted. This is an amazing achievement. Congratulations!
